Vuillard produced this maternal image for the deluxe edition of the journal Pan, a German publication that included original prints. A young mother holds her child on her lap in a dark but cozy interior. They are in a refuge of quiet contentment amidst an explosion of patterns, from the tablecloth to the wallpaper to the checkered orange rug. The pair is lit dramatically, as if occupying a spotlight on a stage.
