A silk on silk needlework mourning picture depicting a woman standing before a tomb or monument on which is inscribed in ink, 'To the memory of departed friends.' The woman wears a golden brown empire-style dress with a cape. The figure is worked in embroidery threads except for the face, hands, and hair which are painted or drawn in. The monument is surmounted by a classical urn and draped with cloth. Both the woman and monument are placed within a hilly landscape beneath a large tree. Three other trees are found on a rise to the left of the monument. Small animals (perhaps sheep) are found in and about the trees and bushes near the base of the monument. Surrounding the scene is a band of stitching approximately 1/2' wide which creates an oval frame separating the scene from the white silk satin foundation without. The picture is worked in a variety of stitches which appear to include stem, satin, and perhaps a variation of chain. The embroidery appears to be in silk threads in various colors of blue, green, yellow, brown, grey, cream, and beige with heavy use of chenille threads. The ground is silk satin with a sheen. The embroidery at the time of donation was framed in a simple bronze painted wooden frame which was not original to the piece and lacked an eglomise mat that would have obscured unembroidered areas of satin ground. A reproduction eglomise mat and gilded frame were added in 2014 after conservation had been completed.
