A small child's quilt or crib quilt, composed of four large blocks in "Northumberland Star" pattern. Each block measures 16-1/2" square and is pieced with a center star motif of red printed cotton with yellow ground printed points expanding in all directions with added triangles of dark red ground print, purplish-brown ground print and yellow ground print. The four corner spandrels of each block feature appliqued leaf motifs of dark red connected to the center star by diagonal yellow strips or "stems" that join the center motifs between the yellow points of each center star.
The four main blocks are separated by 1" sashing in small printed red cotton fabric (see Meller). The sashing joins in the center of the quilt with a small block dvided into four wedge-shaped pieces from two different fabrics, from four pointswith a small center block divided into four triangles of two separate fabrics. The outer border of the quilt cut from a green cotton print. It is unevenly applied with 5" wide stripes at the top and bottom and 2 -1/4" wide along the sides. Rectangles of yellow ground floral print cotton (5"x 2 1/4") are placed in each corner.
The quilt is backed in striped calico, pieced with 3-3/4" square blocks of green calico at the corners of the right side and the same stripe print reversed in orientation between these blocks. The small cover is quilted through a layer of batting (most likely cotton) using in straight lines in the borders and sashing and ...........in.... lines within the interior of triangles, where the quilting stitches are executed in pink and brown cotton threads worked in 10 stitches (including top and bottom) per inch. A wide flat binding of solid reddish brown calico surrounds the entire quilt.
