In "Of Light", Günther Uecker explored and enhanced the tactile nature of reading a book by creating embossed imagery of abstract shapes and patterns based on arrangements of nails. These embossings enabled the artist to explore concepts of light and optics in ways that are related to—yet distinct from—his main artistic practice of creating monochromatic sculptures with nails. As with his sculpture, the book interacts with light raking across its surface, activating the embossed images on the pages as they are turned. This formal play is complemented by Uecker’s selection of German and English texts that deal with light and dark (including Newton’s writing on optics).
