In this engaging composition, the artist portrays a smartly dressed
couple enjoying a lighthearted moment along the banks of the Seine
at Bourgival in the Paris suburbs. Castres, a Swiss painter from
Geneva, moved to the French capital in 1859 to attend the École des
Beaux-Arts. He also served as an assistant to the Spanish painter
Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala, who was noted for his realistic
representations of contemporary life.
