Each page of this book has been embedded with mud from rivers around the world; the name of each river is stamped in red. As a combination of earth and water, mud retains the properties of both elements but exhibits characteristics, such as color and texture, specific to its source. Richard Long, associated with the geologically-inspired, large-scale sculpture practice known as Land Art, experimented with mud from different rivers for several years, informed by his experience working in a paper mill in his hometown of Bristol, England, to create earth-infused pages. Rivers particularly held Long’s fascination, both for their sedimentary material and for their inspirational qualities as bodies of water. According to the artist, “Water, it’s like a circle. I can use it as a vehicle for many ideas.”
