This vase-shaped pitcher with a fan-shaped, scalloped rim is covered in a checkered pattern of squares and many pointed stars. It was executed by a skilled maker who was perhaps one of the recent immigrants from Eastern Europe, many of whom joined American glass manufactories.
New technology transformed the American glass industry in the late 19th century. Natural
gas replaced coal and electricity replaced steam, increasing a maker’s control of machine-powered metal or stone wheels. The result is superior cutting of edges and facets, which inspired new patterns produced by multiple factories.
