A leader of the California art pottery movement, Laura Andreson here transformed red terracotta clay into a plate with concentric circles and radiating rings. This gritty, porous clay is usually reserved for practical ceramics, like roof tiles and everyday flowerpots. For Andreson, the ordinary material challenged expectations for professional ceramics, and her exploration of lines and curves reflected themes of abstraction popular in the mid-20th century.
