This proposal for the quilt #76 (originally to be #75) reveals Studstill’s precise and logical approach to her art. She draws the basic patchwork on graph paper developing a structural framework, then color codes each small square, thus setting up a palette of hues and values. Next, she cuts the pattern pieces from solid colored commercial fabrics, adding painted stripes in contrasting colors to attain the color shifts and gradations she desires prior to stitching the pieces together. “I like hand painting the fabric, dot-by-dot, stripe-by-stripe,” she explains. “I like cutting out the fabric and seeing the little stacks of shapes waiting to be sewn together. Somehow, the orderliness of the activities involved in quilt making are [sic] comforting even though the end product—the quilt itself— is not used for comfort.”
