Baltimore silversmith Andrew Ellicott Warner, Jr. used several methods to decorate this large punch bowl. Raised swags of foliage suspended from ribbons encircle the bowl and are echoed by raised flowers on the base.Warner applied numerous sculptural cast elements, including dramatic lion head ring handles, and winged paw feet on small orbs. A cast and applied unicorn’s head on one side of the bowl is the crest of the Carrington family which had family members in Maryland by 1812. Warner kept the ornament from overwhelming the bowl by leaving some of its surface smooth. By raising the square base on the winged feet, he lifted the bowl off the tabletop so that it would not appear ponderous.
