This quilled and beaded pouch shows a combination of older artistic techniques and newer materials. Prior to the introduction of glass beads through trade with white people, generations of Lakota women in artistic guilds adorned items with dyed porcupine quills. By the 1840s, quillwork designs began to lose popularity as women gained access to brilliantly colored glass seed beads and steel sewing needles.
