Born on Christmas Day in 1749, Rebecca Calvert was the eldest child of Benedict Calvert, the illegitimate son of Charles Calvert, Fifth Lord Baltimore. Benedict Calvert met Rebecca’s future mother, Elizabeth Calvert, through the offices of an Italian named Onorio Razolini, who was living in America. Although Razolini returned to Italy in 1748, he kept up with the powerful Calvert family. Benedict and Elizabeth Calvert eventually sent Razolini a number of family portraits, including this one, which remained in Italy until 1926.
