1909-1929

Physical Qualities Silk pile, silk warp, cotton and copper foil-wrapped cotton wefts, 51 1/2 x 25 1/4 in. (130.8 x 64.1 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Lawrie Platt Hall, Orlando, Florida
Object Number 2006.44
A small rectangular length of an early 20th century (jacquard-woven?) Renaissance Revival style textile based on a 16th century Italian velvet with "artichoke" pattern. The design appears to have been adapted from a gold-bouclé velvet with silver ground, possibly Florentine, a piece of which is in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence*, except that in this textile the dark and light areas are reversed. The background of this textile is covered with a short cut pile, the threads of which range from black or very dark brown to medium browns with some lighter highlights. The design of artichokes, lobed medallions, scrolling foliage, and floral elements is formed of silk and cotton beige threads as well as copper-foil-wrapped (reddish) cotton wefts that cross the entire ground and are bound by beige warp threads. The weave appears to immitate the wear that an old fabric would have shown as do the mottled colors in the supplementary warps forming the pile. This piece represents the entire width, including 1/2" selvages on either side. The two short edges are cut and bound with machine stitching.
