Here, Matisse depicted the model in one of his favorite poses. The model’s direct gaze creates a sense of familiarity and intimacy as she rests on a chair and seemingly hugs herself while looking at the artist and viewer. Matisse felt his pen and ink drawings from this period were some of his most successful and authentic works, as he could freely express his emotions quickly with his confident line.
