Rubber bands lying atop a magazine on a sunny windowsill prompted NUNO designers to ponder how to get the same glossy, impromptu pattern onto fabric. When attempts to adhere real rubber bands to cloth failed, experimentation produced a silicone resin with a similar resiliency dyed to match the originals. To replicate the spontaneous arrangement of the initial scene, NUNO workers placed rubber bands on a photocopier, transferred the resulting designs onto silk-screens, and then printed them layer upon layer onto cloth using the silicon resin. When finished with a glossy film, the dyed silicon resin has the appearance and texture of overlapping rubber bands. The result: a trompe l’oeil textile.
