This untitled set of four large-scale volumes is a collaboration of pairings between four leading New York School poets and four prominent Abstract Expressionist painters. The collaborators were selected and paired by Tiber Press’s founders, master printer Floriano Vecchi and businessman Richard Miller, with the assistance of the poet, teacher, and radio actress Daisy Aldan. For Joan Mitchell and Mike Goldberg, this project was their first foray into printmaking; Grace Hartigan and Alfred Leslie had made their first screenprints with Tiber Press a few years earlier. The use of matte and gloss inks as well as the layering of colors made this printmaking medium well suited to the artists’ spontaneously executed, tactile, and non-objective compositions.
