A small sampler worked on a thin whitish plain woven ground (linen or possibly wool) with polychrome silk threads (including pink (faded to beige on front), purple (faded to light purple on front), salmon or coral (faded to khaki beige ), green, blue-green, lt. blue, brown, black, white, magenta-red, gold, and yellow). In the foreground center bottom is a central fountain with flowing waterfalls atop of which sits a crowned peacock. This elaborate fountain is flanked by profiled figures of male and female deer kneeling on the ground, each with a flower of a different color combination, but same form, just in front of them. Below the deer is a border approximately one inch wide. The center third of this border is worked in an undulating floral design; the right third in a curled ribbon design, and the left third is left unfinished.
At the top of the sampler and in the same orientation as the deer and fountain are the letters of the alphabet confined within a one inch border. The letters are in block form, all capitals, and the letters "J" and "U" are missing as is typical in this early period. The letters are worked in cross stitch in alternating colors of green and gold. The line of letters is finished off with two simple motifs, one a cross, the other possibly a stylized floral design. Above the alphabet, but oriented in the opposite direction in the center is a sacrificial lamb (Agnus Dei) with golden halo spilling its blood into a chalice. To one side of the chalice is a potted lemon tree, to the other, a different potted fruit tree, possibly an apple or pear tree. At the center of the sampler, oriented in the same direction as the Agnus Dei, is a heart-shaped wreath enclosing two initials, possibly "RR". At each side of the wreath are single flowers on leafy stems, appearing to be an apple, a pear (possibly two), a pomegranate, lily of the valley, and another flower (possibly tulip). On the short side of the sampler to the viewer's right is a large floral/vase design; on the other short side is a smaller floral design and a basket with a bird perched atop. The four corners of this sampler are set aside in rectangular sections for the addition of various ornamental patterns and/or stitches. Two of these are filled in; the other two are only begun.
The edges of the sampler are faggoted about 1/8" from edge, turned under, and sewn by hand in neat whip stitches. A 3/8" wide cloth tape, divided into three sections, is sewn around the outer edge.
