Sash

1889-1919

Physical Qualities Silk, 43 x 5 1/2 in. (109.2 x 14 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Ami and William H. B. Howard, Joppa, Maryland
Object Number 2009.205
Wide sash of silk ribbon woven in stripes of multiple colors from selvage to selvage, in pattern of 1/6" gold, 1/2" brown, 1/16" gold, 1-1/4" violet red or magenta, 1/16" gold, 1/2" bright green, 1/16" gold, 3/4" black, and repeated down the length of the ribbon. Across these bands of color, which are woven in a weft-faced rep, are 7 rows of narrow 1/4" wide longitudinal satin-weave stripes separated by 1/8" stripes of the weft-woven colors. Both long edges are selvages. Both short ends are folded over 5/8" and hemmed with hand stitching. Two additional rows of gathering stitches are found beneath the hem across each end, creating a gathered ruffle. The ribbon was most likely a sash of some type, but has no lining, nor any sign of buttons, pins, or other attachment mechanisms.
