THE WARWICK VASE
A Roman 4th-century white marble vase, standing 5'6" high, was found in a late at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli, near Rome, in 1770. Acquired by Sir William Hamilton when British envoy in Naples, it was later purchased by the Earl of Warwick and remained at Warwick Castle until 1979. It is now in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow.
The vase was dedicated to wine, and prominate among its features are entwined vines and pendance brunches of grapes. Its arrival in England generated copies and adaptations in various media.
The firm of Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, of which John Brdige was a partner, was appointed Goldsmiths and Jewelers to the King by 1797.
