Crafted through a collaborative process at the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, these stone cut prints reveal Inuit people engaging in hunting practices. Kiakshuk and Innukjuakju Pudlat are both respected printmakers known for their works that featured such imagery. In 1959, the year prior to these works’ creation, the Qallunaat (the Inuktitut word for non-Inuit) artist James Houston worked alongside Inuit partners to establish the Co-op and associated print shop, which thrives to this day. There, Inuit artists utilized stone—an abundant resource and familiar artistic medium—to adapt Japanese woodblock printing techniques. Printmakers crafted printing plates by tracing an artist’s drawing onto a stone block and then carving away the surrounding stone. Many early prints from this Co-op reveal scenes of traditional life, which were widely sought after by Qallunaat consumers.
