Shoulder Cloth (Selendang) with Batik Design

2000

Physical Qualities Cotton, 20 x 97 in. (50.8 x 246.4 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Martha Custis Peter, Baltimore
Object Number 2008.39
Long narrow rectangular cloth, probably a shoulder cloth (Selendang) with overall pattern of batiked designs in tan, dark blue, grey, and rust, and a narrow, intricately detailed border. The pattern is of the semen class, which depicts a sacred mountain theme with birds, many plants and small shrine huts. The cloth appears to have been worked by hand, the maker using a tjanting to apply wax to both sides as is common to batik.
