The slim proportions of this chair, as well as its geometric, vaguely Egyptian painted ornament and an original black wool showcover embroidered with red and green flowers indicate that the popularity of Baltimore’s highly decorative “fancy” chairs of the Federal period extended to New York during the Aesthetic Movement later in the 19th century.
