Small Beaker Vase

1700-1721

Physical Qualities Porcelain with powder-blue (cobalt) glaze, 7 5/8 H x 4 3/8 Diam. in. (19.4 x 11.1 cm.)
Credit Line Frank J. and Elizabeth L. Goodnow Collection
Object Number 1942.70.316
In proportion, this vase resembles an ancient bronze ritual vessel (zun), but in size, it is more like another (gu). The special stippled or mottled effect was the result of powdered cobalt blown through a bamboo tube onto the moistened unglazed porcelain surface before it was covered by transparent glaze.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, 1942; Goodnow Collection, Baltimore; probably acquired by Elizabeth Goodnow in China, c. 1912-1913
Asian Reinstallation: Home, Temple, Tomb

Markings: Period marks (2 concentric rings) on bottom
