Longquan kilns

Small Dish with Applied Fish Design

12th-13th century

Physical Qualities Stoneware with gray-green glaze, 1 5/8 H × 5 1/8 Diam. in. (4.1 × 13 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Mark S. Pratt, Washington, D.C.
Object Number 2022.120
The fish on this small dish, like the wings on the bird-form ewer nearby, were molded separately and applied to the vessel's surface. Raised decoration on metal objects may have inspired these ceramic embellishments. Chinese celadon wares were widely exported during the late 12th to early 15th century. Bowls and dishes with this fish design were especially popular in the Philippines and Indonesia.
