Physical Qualities Earthenware, smudged black, 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Mrs. J. Lee Tailer

Spherical mold-made body on pedestal base. The bottle exterior has been slipped and fired in a reduced atmosphere. Burnish marks are visible. This example is typical of mass-produced Chimú blackware that features a monkey applique at the spout juncture and small protruding lugs at the base of the stirrup handle. In this example the lugs are shaped in the form of a barnacle.
