NOTE ON TECHNIQUE: a tool or technique other than a needle was used to penetrate the ground to create the hair in the right figure (SH 2/3/21). Refused etching for Duthuit 5.17. One of several preparatory etchings for this theme among the impressions described by Duthuit both as as études and as planches refusées.. Matisse signed this etching "etude" rather than "planche refusee", but was included with the refused plates in the catalogue raisonne. It has been kept in Duthuit number order.
