Keniston spent his entire life in the small town of North Andover, Massachusetts where he was born. Employed in a local textile factory, he also pursued his artistic interests although he received no formal training. The prototype for this painting is a print from 1859 by Currier and Ives. Unlike traditional still lifes of the period which comfortably occupy their allotted spaces, Keniston's abundance of fruit sits precariously on a white marble slab, each piece dependent on its surroundings to keep it firmly in place.
