Prior to his arrival in Paris in 1859, Rico y Ortega trained at the
Royal Academy in his native Madrid. While in France, he took
delight in sketching views of the rivers near the capital in both oil
and watercolor. In the mid 1870s, the artist was drawn to Venice
where he spent increasing amounts of time producing mainly small
compositions that capture the atmospheric conditions and qualities
of light in a particular vista.
