Ray K. Metzker was one of the first students to receive a master’s degree from the Institute of Design, newly created in 1952. For his 1959 thesis, entitled “My Camera and I in the Loop,” Metzker limited himself to taking photographs within the confines of The Loop, the area of downtown Chicago defined by the circle of the elevated train tracks.
