A native of New York, Dannat traveled abroad at an early age, enrolling in the Royal Academy in Munich before settling permanently in Paris in 1880 where he studied with Carolus- Duran and the Hungarian genre and portrait painter, Mihály von Munkácsy. Elegant women, often shown in interior settings, as well as portraiture were his favorite subjects. Here, a young matron admires her reflection as she dons a stylish hat.
