Physical Qualities Graphite with erasing on paper, Sheet: 491 × 370 mm. (19 5/16 × 14 9/16 in.) Mat: 28 × 22 in. (71.1 × 55.9 cm.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.12.58
Cone acquired several drawings in different media detailing models, both identified and unknown, in bust-length portraits. The Plumed Hat is a particularly important study for a painting of the young model Antoinette Arnaud wearing a hat with ribbons embellished by Matisse himself. Both the artist’s wife and mother had been milliners, and Cone appears to have appreciated the degree to which women’s fashion was central to his aesthetic.
