In this work, Whistler created a small, fragmentary view of the city. He made this drawing on special paper supplied by his printer, Thomas Way, that allowed it to be printed the right way round once transferred to the lithographic stone. Its evanescence makes it seem almost like after-images, and it remains among the sparest works Whistler created. This transfer lithograph would be one of Whistler’s last views of the Thames.
