Moriyama, best known for his black-and-white photographs of Tokyo streets, expanded his work in 2008 to include digital color photography. This intensely colored image was one of several he chose to print in a large size. The focus is fully on the flower, to the exclusion of the background. The organic cycle that the flower evokes—of bud, bloom, and decay—reveals the artist’s pressured sense of the passage of time.
