"I am inspired by the architectural elegance of…trees, tranquil and timeless," writes contemporary artist Lesley Richmond. Fascinated with nature, Richmond captures groupings of trees with her camera, concentrating on their branch structure. Not content with merely imposing these digital images onto the surface of cloth, Richmond transforms the structure of the fabric itself. She transfers the photographs onto silk screen, then prints the image using a heat reactive base onto a silk and cotton mixed fabric. Application of a mild acid destroys the cotton fibers, leaving only the image and the silk thread background. Richmond removes and redistributes threads then stiffens those remaining with pigments and metal patinas, thus adding both dimension and color. Under the artist's hand, this process, referred to as 'creative deconstruction," results in mystical, bas-relief images that appear to float on the air.
