As traditional leadership declined, Kongo carvers expanded their repertoire to respond to foreign patrons who were engaged in trade, colonial, and missionary activity. Loango Coast relief-carved ivories document the commercial and cross-cultural nature of late-19th-century maritime activity north and south of the mouth of the Congo River.
