An inscription by Lucas on the reverse of this diminutive
composition indicates that he received it as a gift from the artist’s
father, Léopold. François Flameng, recognized primarily for his
historical paintings and portraits of public figures, trained with his
father, an etcher as well as a painter. This work records two nuns
conversing in a simple interior with light streaming through an
open window behind them. In its choice of subject and its
informality, it is unusual in the artist’s production.
