In these works, Lillian Bayley Hoover reimagined traditions of American landscape painting. She visited sites significant to her, photographing them with her phone and recording observations in her sketchbook. In the studio, she distilled her observations into a new drawing on a panel she prepared with her own subtly toned gray ground layer. After that layer dried, Hoover sanded it down to create a perfectly smooth, matte surface on to which she meticulously applied layers of oil paint. Hoover’s artistic process, coupled with the intimate scale of her work, insists on close looking and invites reflection on our uneasy and unpredictable relationships with the world around us.
