Although it does not carry a designer’s mark, the simple form, broad faceted cuts, and deep purple color of this stately vase are typical of Josef Hoffmann’s designs for Ludwig Moser & Söhne. This forward-thinking Czech glassworks’ products were often sold through the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops). Although he considered himself primarily an architect, Hoffmann designed many objects in multiple mediums, with the intention of elevating the decorative arts to the status enjoyed by painting and sculpture.
