Physical Qualities Wood, 71 x 9 in. (180.3 x 22.9 cm.)
Credit Line Anonymous Gift
Object Number 2007.291
Carved from a single piece of wood, this dramatic post once adorned the interior courtyard of the Nupe king’s palace. Here, an artist has skillfully transformed key objects of daily life such as a drum (at the bottom) and mortar (at the top), into a spiraling column that intersperses geometric form with open space.
