Known also in England as a monteith, this bowl would have been used for chilling wine glasses in ice. European attempts at solving the riddle of true porcelain resulted in the formulation of various mixtures of white clay and such hardening ingredients such as glass, soapstone and bone ash. These all carry the label of soft-paste porcelain.
