Hervier, the son of a miniature painter and portraitist, devoted himself to plein-air (open air) painting, working mainly in the countryside at Fontainebleau, near Paris. He also traveled throughout France in search of the rural settings that became his preferred subjects. Although he received little official recognition during his lifetime, Hervier was admired by a number of his contemporaries including Camille Corot who owned several of his watercolors.
