Physical Qualities Cotton, 80 x 93 in. (203.2 x 236.2 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Nancy Gideon Clark, Baltimore
Object Number 2009.144
A quilt top composed of 58 six-pointed pieced stars approximately 6-1/2" from point to point appliquéd onto a white cotton ground. Each star is composed of 96 1-1/2" diamond-shaped sections of printed cloth totally 5,108 diamonds. Each ray is made of four diamonds per row. Stars are arranged touching point to point in 9 rows including 4 rows of 7 stars alternating with 5 rows of 6 stars. The diamond-shaped sections of cloth within each star are arranged in bands of small scale multi-colored prints (paisley and madder-red prints, parsley or vermicular prints in lavender, now turning brown, madder oranges, browns, chocolate browns, chrome orange over dyed greens, that radiate outward around the center). Excellent planning is evident in the way in which the colorful prints forming the different bands of diamonds are arranged to show matching areas of the print and coordinated for pleasing color. The stars may have been template pieced since the joining is very precise. The pattern is called "Virginia Star."* The quilt top has no borders, nor any other ornament. The stars are pieced by hand and appliquéd by hand to the backing with whip stitches. The quilt top currently is joined to a white cotton backing, which is brought over the front and turned under to give a flat 3/4" binding. Batting is used between the quilt top and bottom and the stars are quilted in large outline stitches by hand. The backing and batting were later additions which will be removed once the quilt is accessioned. * Per Yvonne M. Chin, The collector's Dictionary of Quilt Names and Patterns, p. 196.
