Banjo form. Thermometer inset in the throat panel. Eagle finial atop slightly tapered plinth. White dial with Arabic numbers marking hours. Very plain steel hands. Face enclosed by brass bezel surrounding slightly convex roughly cut glass. Tapering throat has scroll and pierced brass side arms. Removable throat panel has molded frame with applied twisted rope decoration enclosing on eglomis‚ panel. The painted area has gold leaf foliate decoration on light blue ground with brown highlighting and green leaves at the center. Area of yellow ground at bottom has Monroe's name and banner at center. The painting surrounds a thermometer attached to a japanned tin plate. The tin plate is marked at 0 degrees 'Extreme cold', at 32 degrees 'Freezing', at 56 degrees 'Temperate,' at 76 degrees 'Sumr ht', at 90 degrees 'Blood ht', at 112 'Fever ht', at 176 degrees 'Spirits boil', at 212 degrees 'Water boil'. Base door has same frame as that of the throat. The eglomis‚ panel shows a white structure facing a lake which has a triple arched bridge crossing to opposite bank which has a small structure upon it. Tiny male figure in the foreground. Scene is painted within an oval that has a leaf-scalloped edge and an open ellipse at center to show the pendulum. Bracket base has gold balls and an acorn-like pendant.
