An American painter and enthusiastic promoter of modernist art, Walter Pach (1883–1958) traveled to Paris, France, in 1914 to help organize an exhibition of Matisse’s
work in the United States for the following year. Much like other prints from this series, Matisse worked quickly to make this portrait—according to Pach, it took about five
minutes for the French artist to create his image. This work has many of the signature marks of these etchings, including its vertical format and small size.
