Based on Song Dynasty wood sculpture.
The Goddess of Mercy, seated in a pose of "royal ease", her proper right leg drawn up with proper right arm resting on the knee; her proper left leg extends down with foot resting on the floor, body braced by proper left arm positioned vertically at rear of left side. The garment which falls from the proper left shoulder, baring the chest which is adorned with strings of beaded jewelry, covers the lower body in graceful and well-defined folds. The thick, square toes of both feet are visible. The massive head rises squarely from the fleshy neck. The full lips are drawn into a subtle smile, the heavy eyelids half-closed under arching eyebrows, and the long earlobes extend nearly to the shoulders. The hair, defined by a series of sharp, raised ridges, is drawn into a six-tiered topknot with two long strands extending over either shoulder. Traces of red pigment remain on the lips, while some blue pigment remains on the hair.
The proper left knee and foot are worn from being rubbed by supplicants' hands.
