Haden published writings on etching and exhibited in London and Paris. The works shown here are exceptions in his oeuvre, as most of his etchings treat rural subjects. It may be possible that these works belonged to a joint project he had planned with Whistler
around 1863.
Both prints depict Chelsea and, on the opposite shore, Battersea, the area most depicted by Whistler after the docklands. Chelsea was known for its boat building, especially of smaller craft that could navigate the upper Thames.
