1889-1909

Physical Qualities Silk, silk embroidery threads, 33 3/4 x 341 1/4 in. (85.7 x 866.8 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Lawrie Platt Hall, Orlando, Florida, in Honor of her Mother Virginia Stein Pitcher
Object Number 2004.173
Long length of off white silk crepe de chine embroidered with dragon motifs in white threads with dimensional technique. The motifs are laid out in 15 panels for cutting to make a woman's dress, possibly "a la disposition." This technique was typical of embroidered garments in China such as dragon robes. (per Cooper Hewitt Museum curator, via Ms. Hall, unconfirmed by published source.) The largest motif measures 27 x 37 inches and the smallest (two cuff panels) measure 2 x 8-1/2 inches.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by gift, 2004; Lawrie Platt Hall; Clara Virginia Stein; Mrs. Thomas Hunter

Silk was given to donor's mother (Clara Virginia Stein) in the 1930s for her wedding dress (but never used) by Mrs. Thomas Hunter of Baltimore (wife of Colonel Thomas Hunter) who brought it back from her stay in China.
