Leong’s History Images series presents Chinese cities as they are being rapidly reinvented and rebuilt. This image records the demolition of a traditional district, ringed by new construction. What was once a long, slow-moving process of urban change has
become something the artist has called the destruction of history, a message promoted by the Cultural Revolution’s slogan “Smash the Old World, Build the New World.” Leong has described his desire to represent “the empty moment between the erasure of
the past and the arrival of the future.”
