Physical Qualities Cotton, 71 x 83 in. (180.3 x 210.8 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Alexander Baer, Baltimore
Object Number 2011.331
A bedspread created from yo-yos or bon-bons, i.e. flat circles of fabric which are gathered to make smaller puckered circles of fabric. This example is composed of approximately 5,893 round 1' diameter yo-yos with 71 yo-yos in one direction and 83 in the other. The yo-yos are made from different printed fabrics in a great variety of styles and colors indicative of the 1930s or 40s era: pinks, lavenders, turquoises, blues, black or dark blue. They are attached to one another by hand. There is no machine stitching, no lining or backing, no trim or border.
