[Allison Kelliher] Hi, everybody, I'm Allison Kelliher. I'm originally from Nome, Alaska. I'm Alaska Native and American Indian. I'm Dena or Cowichan Athabaskan tribe, and I live here in Baltimore. I'm a traditional healer and physician. I feel so curious about this painting because it is very beautiful and draws me in, but it's also very ominous when you look at the details. I'm particularly curious about the background, which seems like it's cliffs of ice, which to me being from Alaska, seem somewhat friendly. I feel like it is a very romanticized view of a Native person wearing a loincloth in a canoe. When I was reading the label, I noticed that it read "Hiawatha was an Ojibwe character," but I understand Hiawatha to be a peacemaker for the Northeast Tribes, the Iroquois Confederacy of at least five different, and later more different, tribes coming together in agreement. And then I came to learn that Longfellow—who was, of course, a writer—had written a poem about Hiawatha and had changed the name of the Ojibwe hero to Hiawatha in his poem. I like this painting a lot because [laughs] I feel the light is so effectively used.  Sometimes it actually reminds me of being out in the wilderness, hiking in Alaska on particularly, "weather-y" days [laughs]. But also what I see here is a lot of treachery and difficulty, characterized by dark black snakes that seem to cover all of the ground and even be throughout the water. But I also want to bring attention to the flying creature who is in the sky. And it almost looks like an eagle. But when you look more closely, it could be a dragon or a bat. I feel like that's the wonderful thing about art is, it so often is up to the interpretation.
